The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level examination that evaluates candidates’ comprehensive understanding of undergraduate subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Commerce, Arts, Architecture, and Humanities. GATE is jointly conducted by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For GATE 2027, IIT Madras is the organizing institute responsible for conducting the examination.

GATE 2027 Eligibility

Prior to initiating the application process, candidates are strongly advised to ensure that they fulfill the eligibility requirements for GATE 2025. Those currently enrolled in the 3rd year or above of an undergraduate degree program, or who have successfully completed any government-approved degree program in Engineering/Technology/Science/Architecture/
Humanities, are eligible to participate in GATE 2025.

The following are some of the Professional Societies/Institutions that conduct examinations in various engineering fields:

Candidates holding certifications from any of these professional societies must ensure that the examinations are recognized by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Planning, etc.

For candidates who have obtained/pursued their qualifying degree from countries other than India, they must currently be in the 3rd year or above or have completed a Bachelor's degree (of at least three years' duration) in Engineering/Technology/Science/Architecture/
Humanities.

Any candidate meeting the aforementioned criteria is eligible to participate in GATE 2025.

Note: Candidates pursuing any higher degree or possessing a degree higher than those specified in the table below will still be permitted to participate in GATE 2025. It's crucial to verify GATE 2025 eligibility before proceeding with online applications, as fees once paid are non-refundable. Candidates must also ensure they choose the correct subject for the examination and are aware of its score card utility in future.

GATE 2027 conducted by IIT MADRAS

The GATE 2027 examination, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, is expected to begin the online registration process from August 15–30, 2026. Candidates will be able to submit their applications through the official GATE portal, with the regular deadline for submission expected in the first week of October 2026. The GATE 2027 exam is scheduled to be conducted in February 2027 (Saturday and Sunday). The examination will be held in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode with a total duration of 3 hours. Some papers may be conducted in two different sessions. The exam will be organized at recognized TCS iON test centres located across major cities in India and selected international locations. The official notification for GATE 2027 is expected to be released between 5th – 20th August, 2026 on the official website of IIT Madras: https://gate.iitm.ac.in. The GATE 2027 Application Fee varies depending on the candidate category and the time of registration. Candidates applying during the regular application period pay the standard fee, while those submitting applications during the extended registration period must pay an additional late fee.
