The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level examination that evaluates candidates’ comprehensive understanding of undergraduate subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Commerce, Arts, Architecture, and Humanities. GATE is jointly conducted by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For GATE 2027, IIT Madras is the organizing institute responsible for conducting the examination.

Note: Candidates pursuing any higher degree or possessing a degree higher than those specified in the table below will still be permitted to participate in GATE 2025. The GATE 2027 examination, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, is expected to begin the online registration process from August 15–30, 2026. Candidates will be able to submit their applications through the official GATE portal, with the regular deadline for submission expected in the first week of October 2026. The GATE 2027 exam is scheduled to be conducted in February 2027 (Saturday and Sunday). The examination will be held in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode with a total duration of 3 hours. Though updates are possible, they are unlikely. Payments are exclusively accepted online via net banking, debit card, credit card, wallet, or UPI. Candidates should verify that their credit/debit cards support online transactions before proceeding. The application fee cannot be transferred or refunded, except if a particular two-paper combination is eliminated by the GATE 2025 Organizing Institute. GATE 2025 does not have any international centers; therefore, foreign nationals or Indian nationals residing abroad must travel to India to take the exam.
The application fee excludes any additional charges such as service fees, processing fees, or other fees imposed by banks. If applying for two papers, the fee will be double that of a single paper.
The Admit Cards for GATE 2025 can exclusively be downloaded from the IIT Roorkee website during the first week of January 2025. They will not be dispatched through postal mail or email. Candidates are required to carry a printed copy of the Admit Card on A4 paper to the examination venue for verification, along with a valid original photo Identity Document, as specified during the online application process. The Admit Card is considered valid only if the candidate's photograph and signature are clearly visible. It's recommended that candidates print the Admit Card on A4 size paper using a laser printer, preferably in color.
